I love square necklines. They are uncommon enough to be distinctive, and I always think they add a feeling of sophistication to the garment. I looked through my shop recently, and realized I didn't have many fall and winter pieces. I sketched out a few ideas, and knew I wanted a sheath dress with a square neckline in a really fun, modern color.
I sewed a few samples before I hit on the technique that I'm happy with. For this neckline, I draft a facing, a separate piece of fabric that mirrors the neckline opening. The facing is fused, then sewn to the opening. Seams are clipped and the facing is turned towards the inside of the garment. My favorite part is the toptitching around the neckline. It really emphasizes the square shape.
It's no secret I love Western inspired clothing. For me, the square neckline offers the best of the upscale country look that I adore.
FABRIC: Organic Cotton Jersey-- This is a medium weight jersey fabric, with a slight stretch. It is more structured than drapey, so the fabric reveals your form less when wearing than is typical of knitwear. This is a fair trade fabric, 100% GOTS certified organic. I buy it in Natural, meaning it has not been whitened with bleach or other whiteners.
COLOR: After your skirt is cut and sewn together, it is hand dyed in color of your choice. All dyes I use are low impact and Earth friendly. Shown in Smoke.
Byzantine - inspired by paintings of the Byzantine era, a gold with a metallic, green tint.
Saddle - a burnt orange.
Blue Sea - my version of Navy.
Aqua - a light teal.
Plum - a royal purple.
Spruce - a blue- green.
Chocolate - a rich brown, like a milk chocolate bar.
Gold - a saturated yellow.
Tennessee Buff - a warm light brown.
Cornflower - an old fashioned, soft blue.
Black Cherry - a wine color.
Smoke - grey.
Gold and Smoke are the only premixed dyes that I use. All other colors are custom blends made by me. Due to the nature of the hand dying process, expect some variation from dye lot to dye lot.
CARE: Machine wash cold, line dry. As a precaution, wash separately the first few times.
RECOMMEND: I recommend slips to be worn under all my clothing. Slips provide a smooth layer between you and your clothing, so that your garment will hang properly and skim your curves instead of cling. I prefer slips without lace, as lace can show through jersey, and for the slip to be form fitting, smooth, and a nude color.
