Rain impacts me the most of any type of weather. If I'm snowed in with a huge storm, I'll bake and watch movies and feel like I have a mini vacation. If it's too hot in the summer, I'll take my boys for a walk deep into the shade of the woods. After a few days of rain though I feel dampened and morose and out of ideas.
The wonderful thing about rain though, is that there are so many concrete changes in the world after a good soaking. The green that emerges in Spring is so much more vibrant after it rains. Growth is suddenly visible, and the world seems changed in a tangible way. I think that this is an apt analogy for people too, that rain is like a necessary respite that allows what is below the surface to materialize. It's natural to feel ebb and flow, and the thought of accepting that was the idea for this quilt. What if instead of dreading the rain, I welcomed it.
To do so, I wanted rain like colors, but vibrant. I used my hand dyed and shibori fabrics for the off center patchwork strip. The navy that surrounds the patchwork is made more joyous and lively by the white pop of thread. My goal for this quilt was to convey the movement of rain. I free motion quilted spirals on top of the patchwork, to represent a wild storm, and the parallel lines with dotted with circles to imitate the steady down fall of rain. I think the overall effect is bright and cheerful, and, I hope, welcoming.
The quilt measures approximately 43" wide by 54" high. Sewn from my hand dyed cotton, uses Made in America cotton batting, and is free motion quilted with Isacord thread.
