I grew up in the deep country. No sidewalks, few neighbors, and absolutely no street lamps. My first apartment on my own was in the big city. The first night I woke up to the sounds of people on the pavement below and the city lights that always stayed on illuminating my new bedroom. I missed the pitch black night I was accustomed to, and had the feeling that nature was getting chased out by concrete.
I acclimated to the sounds of the city and found that even in a concrete jungle, nature can thrive. I grew to love back alleys exploding with vines and cobble stone streets lined with pruned rose bushes.
I wanted the quilt to be a celebration of the nature we find in urban spaces, both the wild and the cultivated. The stripes of my hand dyed cotton and shibori fabric are both orderly and lively, and represent the many gardens tended with great care that I'd see in front of buildings and bursting from patios. The free motion quilted vine on the center panel is a homage to every persistent weed growing in a sidewalk crack. Contrasting all that color is black, overgrown with wild, organic swirls.
As always, I used pesticide free cotton batting for this quilt. I free motion quilted this quilt with white Isacord thread. This quilt is approximately 43 x 60", perfect for cuddling underneath on the couch, or hanging on the wall as your own urban garden.
